The world-famous Droste chocolate has its origins in Haarlem. From 1863, confectioner and cake baker Gerardus Johannes Droste sold, among other things, large ornate chocolate letters and round flat chocolates in his shop on Verwulft (today's McDonalds). The popular Pastilles Droste allowed him to open his first factory on Haarlem's Spaarne in 1890. Soon Droste chocolate pastilles went all over the world.
